³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ Registrants are ideal for key shifts in new NHS PlanVictoria WakenshawThu, 03 Jul 2025 11:42:15 +0000/news/basrat-registrants-are-ideal-for-key-shifts-in-new-nhs-plan66320cddd958fd5652fcfba5:6632120214466f4bbcb90a59:686659d3902cd92a4e9776dbThe New NHS plan has been unveiled today, with emphasis on three key changes including shifting from hospital to community and from sickness to prevention.

³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ registered Sport Rehabilitators are ideally placed to make a difference.

High-quality community rehabilitation

³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ supports Sport Rehabilitators to deliver effective, person-centred rehabilitation and work with Alliance partners to assist those in need.

The new NHS Plan is looking to move hospital care to community care and states: “millions more patients will be treated closer to home with the roll out of Neighbourhood Health Services across the country as part of the 10 Year Health Plan.â€

Healthcare professionals delivering person-centred rehabilitation

Sport Rehabilitators help people suffering from MSK pain, injury or illness. They work with people of all ages and all backgrounds to maintain their health and fitness, recover from and prevent injury and reduce pain using exercise, movement and manual based therapeutic interventions.

³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ and Sport Rehabilitators can aid with this key focus on prevention, as clinicians, Sport Rehabbers focus on treating the patient in front of them and work to inspire patients to make positive lifestyle choices. The new plan references prevention: “This is a positive step towards the healthier future people want. Obesity is a chronic, relapsing condition that needs long-term support. Crucially, as the Government now rightly recognises, we must also shift to preventing ill health before it starts.†

CIMSPA is the chartered professional body for the sport and physical activity sector workforce and ³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ is the professional membership, accreditation and regulatory organisation that represents Sport Rehabilitators in the UK.

At the centre of the partnership is a commitment that the two organisations will collaborate on areas of common interest to ensure that newly developed career pathways and professional standards for sport and physical activity professionals are aligned to the needs of employers, employees and the wider sport and physical activity sector and are complementary to those established in the profession for Sport Rehabilitators.

The two organisations share a goal of creating a more standardised approach to Higher Education (HE) course endorsement, aligned to agreed professional standards, to provide clarity and confidence to the HE sector.

For occupations in the field of Sport Rehabilitation, CIMSPA will recognise ³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡â€™s undergraduate and postgraduate endorsement, directing members who wish to progress their career to Sports Rehabilitation to ³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ endorsed courses and ³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ registration. Both our organisations strive to maintain and develop quality training provision across sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing, and formalising this relationship will help us to continue to support and recognise the brilliant, skilled professionals in our sector.â€

Steve Aspinall, Chief Executive of ³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡, also commented:

“Sport Rehabilitation and the Sport and Physical Activity sector are professional areas that provide vital contributions to public health and wellbeing. Samantha Parsons, ³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ registered Sport Rehabilitator and Director of Arch Health and Fitness in Kew played a key role in supporting GB tennis in Paris. Sam shares her story with us.

“I had the honour of being part of the Great Britain tennis medical team at the Olympic Games, following my experience at the National Tennis Centre and with the Davis Cup Team.â€

Preparation for team requirements

"Significant preparation was undertaken by the GB Tennis Team Manager, Iain Bates with the British Olympic Association to anticipate the team's requirements. The BOA offered 3 staff training sessions prior to the games to ensure all medical and administrative staff were adequately prepared, we also engaged with representatives from Physio Lab and Rock Tape to provide exposure to cutting-edge equipment and products whilst also allowing for networking with professionals across a variety of other sporting disciplines.

Together with fellow physiotherapists Shane Annun and Will Herbert, we were adequately prepared regarding tournament format, venues. A facilities app enabled us to manage reservations for massage beds and gym spaces.

One of the most important parts of our preparation involved ensuring the team had the supplies needed for the duration of the tournament.  Ranging from tape and S&C kit to detailed nutritional supplements in line with each of the players’ requirements, coordinated by the GB Tennis Team nutritionist, Dan Ellis."

Accommodation, cardboard beds and food!

"Adorned in the iconic stripes of adidas, our home away from home was nestled within the athletes’ village where the unlikely cosiness of cardboard beds took us by surprise. We were fortunate to have another Team GB venue 20 minutes away from the village which housed additional facilities for athlete preparation and allowed nearest and dearest to see the athletes.  Thankfully, the culinary experience at the GB lodge was somewhat superior to the offerings at the Olympic Village due to the efforts of the very talented Team GB exclusive chef."

Daily roles and heat management

"Each day consisted of checking the requirements of individual players and coordinating travel, court practice times, warm ups, gym and treatment requests both before, during and after practice and matches.

The days were relatively long depending on what court times we were allocated, but we often left the village at 8.30am and rarely returning before 9pm in the evening with additional treatment in the village beyond that time if required (sometimes until 1.30am).  Despite the early rain, conditions were soon verging on the tropical with temperatures court-side reaching over 34 degrees, an additional aspect to be managed.  With that in mind, it became essential that each player made good use of the ice baths and sleep pods to maximise their individual recovery needs."

Medical Facilities

"We benefitted from the robust backing of Team GB's medical staff and had swift access to medical services when needed. A poly clinic was located within the village for MRI and advanced medical needs. Our tennis doctor, Guy Evans, and the team at Fortius were also on hand back in the UK if needed.

Whilst results didn’t go as well as was hoped, each of the players performed with extraordinary spirit and certainly relished the Olympic Experience, most notably with Andy Murray concluding his prolific sporting journey.

The experience was both remarkable and rewarding, and thankfully now a family holiday beckons!"

Sam is pictured with GB Tennis stars Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury who have nine Grand Slam doubles titles between them.

The alliance’s priorities are:

  • to gain political commitment to delivering universal access to rehabilitation to meet needs

  • to improve the quality of rehabilitation through new models, better data collection, planning, commissioning and delivery of services.

It is vital that rehabilitation forms a core part of NHS future planning. The next government must make a commitment to rehabilitation as an equal pillar of health care to medicines and surgery. That’s why we’ve signed this letter as part of the Community Rehabilitation Alliance.

ARMA’s ‘Act Now’; Report on MSK Health Inequalities and Deprivation The Act Now: Musculoskeletal Health Inequalities and Deprivation report from ARMA highlights the impact of social and economic determinants of health on those living with MSK conditions, recognising that people in deprived areas face far greater challenges in managing their MSK conditions and accessing quality MSK services.

The report aims to address the drivers of poor musculoskeletal health acting on people living in deprivation and bring a focus to the part health services across the UK can play to address inequalities.

The report provides practical advice and signposting for health systems, MSK services and practitioners in a position to shift the dial in the right direction and implement innovative strategies to overcome barriers to healthcare access and tackle unequal health outcomes in MSK health.

Key recommendations from the report include:

  • Getting closer to and knowing your community better – solutions such as moving services into community spaces make them more accessible to under-served groups from deprived areas.

  • Developing shared ownership of services through engagement and co-production.

  • Using data to identify, tackle and monitor barriers to access and unequal health outcomes.

  • Targeting intensive and tailored supported self-management where need is greatest.

Campaign for life-changing NHS rehab services to be available to all.³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ Admin OfficeThu, 22 Feb 2024 15:47:00 +0000/news/campaign-for-life-changing-nhs-rehab-services-to-be-available-to-all66320cddd958fd5652fcfba5:6632120214466f4bbcb90a59:6644cafeca636e191bd635ccRight to Rehab Campaign supported by Steven Fry and the Community Rehab Alliance

Calling for an end to the postcode lottery for NHS rehabilitation services that help people recover from the likes of car crashes, cancer or strokes, the campaign wants life-changing NHS rehab services to be made available to everyone in the UK no matter where they live.

³Ô¹ÏÏÖ³¡ is a member of the Community Rehab Alliance which supports the campaign alongside over 20 healthcare charities, royal colleges such as the British Geriatric and the Stroke Association.

Stephen Fry stresses how important rehab for all is “I had a very nasty fall from a 6ft high stage onto concrete. The orthopaedic surgeon warned me that people who had fallen from lesser heights had never walked again. I am one of the lucky ones and I am feeling whole and healed thanks to good physiotherapy.

I feel very lucky to be able to walk again which is why I’m supporting this campaign to make rehabilitation services available no matter where you live. Rehabilitation is just as important as medicine and surgery in helping people reclaim their lives after injury, illness or because of long-term conditions. Everyone deserves access to rehabilitation and I back this campaign to have rehab reps in every hospital to ensure everyone gets the right help at the right time.â€

recently supported athletes at the World Athletic championships, we asked Simon to give us the inside scoop on how it went.

“THE most incredible 2 weeks working with athletes for the @worldathletics championships in Budapest! To be trusted by world class athletes from various countries in the preparation and recovery from their races is an honour and something I have worked incredibly hard to maintain. I worked with a number of sprinters who compete in the 100, 200 and 400m events and I specialised in the preparation, maintenance and recovery of these athletes through the rounds.

Timings can be tight! World Silver Medal winner @tebogo_letsile take part in semi-finals at 16:35; we then had less than 3 hours to prepare him for the final. One hour before his race we did activations to ensure he was suitably prepared, (see video) I’m pleased to be a small part of this runner’s journey.

My day to day work involves injury assessment if required; activation of key musculature pre-race; administering manual therapy after the post event and athletes load monitoring to shape treatment and recovery strategies in between rounds.â€

Simon supports a number of athletes throughout the season to ensure their performance is optimal, this will include travelling around Europe to Screen for injury risk, implement injury prevention strategies and conduct sports science testing to monitor performance. Simon completes this work alongside his lecturing role at the University of Bolton.

Alongside the buzz of being at the Championships, Simon also got to celebrate success with his athlete - Letsile Tebogo won Silver in the 100m and Bronze in the 200m and Muzala Samukonga is the current 400m Commonwealth Champion.

Simon’s advice – “my best advice for anyone... “be comfortable being uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone... because when you do... opportunities arise that may help pave a new pathâ€

New Pregnancy Questionnaire ToolVictoria WakenshawTue, 24 Jan 2023 16:15:00 +0000/news/new-pregnancy-questionnaire-tool66320cddd958fd5652fcfba5:6632120214466f4bbcb90a59:66ec3ff9998b01582beb9ca0Sport Rehabilitator Marlize De Vivo, Co-Founder of The Active Pregnancy Foundation, collaborated in the questionnaire creation

Overcoming concerns and identifying those who should seek medical advice before exercise.

The Get Active Questionnaire for Pregnancy identifies the small number of individuals who should seek medical advice as a first step to becoming or continuing to be physically active during pregnancy, and to help the majority of healthy pregnant individuals overcome any concerns they have with getting or staying active.

Sport Rehabilitator Marlize De Vivo, collaborated with this effort which recognises the importance of continued physical activity and acknowledges the role of healthcare and qualified exercise professionals in facilitating an active pregnancy.

"Is it safe for me? Will it harm my baby? These are questions often asked by women when becoming pregnant. And whilst research has shown that the benefits of being active during pregnancy far outweighs the potential risks, some women might need to consult with a healthcare professional before taking part, and in some cases, will benefit from additional monitoring, support and guidance from a qualified exercise professional. The Get Active Questionnaire for Pregnancy removes the uncertainty around these decisions and empowers women to take ownership of their own health and wellbeing.

It has been an honour working with Dr. Davenport and the CSEP team on behalf of BASES and the Active Pregnancy Foundation to align this screening tool to the United Kingdom’s physical activity guidelines.. Dr Marlize De Vivo, PhD / CEO & Co-Founder, The Active Pregnancy Foundation
